Gods and Giants
Short History of the Berseles family
In the year 896 AR, the god Aroden defeated and slew the wizard-king Tar-Baphon. For millennium everyone thought that was the end of the tyrant. But not even the power of a god could prevent the wizard-king from rising as a lich in 3203 AR. Tar-Baphon returned even more powerful than before and set out to conquer the lands around him. With a horde of human and orc followers, he spent five hundred years conquering much of central Avistan. The Knights of Ozem and the dwarves of Kraggodan joined with the mighty Empire of Taldor in an alliance to defeat Tar-Baphon that would come to be called the Shining Crusade. Upon his defeat, the Empire knew that if even the power of Arodan could not keep the tyrant from rising, that they would not be able to defeat him in death. They constructed the prison of Gallowspire, and created the Taldan province of Lastwall to form a permanent guard for the prison of Tar-Baphon, governed by the Knights of Ozem.
When Cheliax broke from Taldor to become an independent nation, Lastwall also split from the Empire. They proclaimed their reason for independence was that their mission to watch over Gallowspire was too important to be drawn into politics and infighting. Cheliax recognized Lastwall as an independent nation. Although they were not happy about the split, Taldor continued to supply Lastwall with troops and supplies. Today Freewall is goverened by a Watcher-Lord elected by the five Precentors Martial of the Crusader War College in Vigil. Lastwall now stands guard over both the encroaching ocish hordes to the northwest in the Hold of Belkzen and the undead minions of Virlych in the north.
Several of the noble families of Lastwall hail from the original Knights of Ozem that defeated Tar-Baphon. One of these knights was Lord Coramar Berseles who fought beside Iomedae in the Second Battle of Encarthan. Coramar was one of the mortally wounded knights whom Iomedae called upon the herald of Aroden to strengthen them. This was Iomedaes fourth of eleven miracles prior to her godhood that are recounted in her holy book The Acts of Iomedae. Coramar was ever close to Iomedae during her mortal adventures and was present for many of her other miricles, including her ascension to godhood at the starstone. After the asenction of Iomedae, Coramar returned to Lastwall to help the build the nation into the stronghold of righteousness it is today.
The line of Berseles has always been strong in Lastwall. Even before that they can trace their lineage back to several of the noble houses of Cheliax. The Berseles line is known for being strongly mixed with celestial blood. Many of the children of members of the house display traits of their celestial ancestors. So varied is this celestial blood line that it is not uncommon to have two siblings born to the same parents exhibit different traits of Agathion, Angel, Archon, Azata, Garuda, or Peri bloodlines.
The most recent patriarch of house Berseles is Denovan Berseles. An archon blooded aasimar, Denovan is the father of four children. Late in summer of 4715, Denovan went on a mission to speak with Captain Thaum Gauntwood of castle Everstand. After speaking with the captain, Denovan disappeared into the frontier. Now in the spring of 4716, his children have left Vigil to come looking for word of their father.
