Gods and Giants
Durin Journal 2
4-23-16: Session 2
After being revived from the afterworld, I feel like I returned a new man. Finally listening to my mentor, I have refocused my efforts to study the magical arts. I would like to find some time to research a more specialized form of magic that I have heard about. I am interested in looking into learning about familiars and potentially spending some time being trained by a witch.
As we continued through the “abandoned” plague house, we ran across a young boy hiding behind a burlap bag, and before I could say anything, Mandy filled him with arrows. The poor boy claims he had been beaten by the orc we previously slayed. After attending to his wounds and questioning him about his presence here, we continued to investigate the plague house.
We ran across a giant ooze that was so fearsome that Mandy and Sol took off running at first sight. They claim they were going to “attack from the hallway,” but that sounded like an excuse to me. No worries though, Felix and myself took care of it. Next we encountered some strange rats in the large room of the plague house. They were difficult to hit and clearly influenced by strange magic, but we were able to dispatch them as well. After a second look around, we decided that we had cleared the place and continued on our way out.
It seems that Othdan, the boy, had run away from home with hopes of adventure and more excitement than a pig farm could provide. After much discussion and debate about the concepts of right and wrong, I finally convinced the others that we should let the boy’s parents know that he is ok and that they don’t have to worry about him. I’m not surprised that I would have to explain what the right thing to do is to Mandy, but I would have thought Felix would have known without debate.
As we arrive at the pig farm, I immediately spot an older man that is clearly Othdan’s father and after a short conversation which entailed correcting him on his sons name, I offered to take Othdan on as my apprentice. I feel like this will serve two purposes. First, I could use an extra hand helping out with some of the menial tasks that are part of adventuring, especially when it comes to taking care of the horses and running about town. Next, I think that having him around may help remind Mandy of what happens when you make rash decisions and act without thinking things through. Either way, I will have to ensure that Othdan gets proper training and has the opportunity to lead a meaningful life.
After leaving the farm, we returned to town to continue our investigation. We have hit a brick wall when it comes to this though. We know that Rodric didn’t kill himself, and that it was likely an orc with facial tattoos, but we don’t really know how to continue forward. No one seems to know anything about him nor have they seen him. I know he’s in town somewhere though, he sent assassins to kill us. We easily defeated them and took them to the jail. They confirmed some of our suspicions about the orc, but couldn’t provide more information than that.
