4-30-16: Session 3
It has been an eventful last few days here in Trunau. Thinking back on where the events of the past days started, I can only conclude that it started when one father’s scouts, Tobin, was carted into town, near death and unconscious. The commotion of his arrival was easily noticed and we rushed to see what it was all about. Upon seeing him lying in the cart, we revived him with divine magic and began to question him.
Tobin said that a small group of scouts had been sent to Lastwall to retrieve an artifact by father. They were returning with the artifact when they were ambushed by a group of orcs as well as some sort of demon. Two of the four were slain in the initial battle, Tobin was able to escape, but the orcs and demon took the squad’s leader captive. We quickly decided that we should pursue these orcs, rescue the hostage, and retrieve the artifact.
After a partial days travel, we set up camp in hopes of getting some rest and getting an early start the next day. That night we were ambushed by a group of the same orcs that had set upon the scouts. Their power and skill was pretty evident, and we only survived because of Sol’s skill with a sword. Most of us were beaten unconscious and nearly died. With the orcs dispatched, we questioned one of the surviving orcs before dispatching justice. These orcs were truly unnerving! They had eyes that protruded from their foreheads and had their lounges cut out of the mouths. They were well equipped and clearly trained in group tactics. We would have to be very careful indeed when dealing with these creatures.
The next morning we continued to the orcs hideout, a cave system that had a river running through it. We snuck in as far as we could, even with the limitations presented by two men in heavy armor. As we entered the cave system, the first clearing we came contained a two vial demons. We ambushed them and quickly bested them before they could summon in more help. After that, we continued to the next area and dispatched a goblin mage in what must have been one of the most gruesome displays of sword power I have ever seen. Sol struck him with his enormous sword and cut the goblin in half.
We continued to explore the caverns and quickly ran into the creature that Tobin had described to us. It looked to be some sort of orc that had been combined with a giant crab. This creature tore through us quickly and seemed to be immune to our physical weapons. I set upon barraging him with force missiles and finally defeated him. We recovered a significant amount of treasure from the creature as well as the artifact that had been taken. After another encounter with the last group of orcs, we headed back to town.
When we returned to Trunau, we took the lead scout to the church in hopes of learning more about the curse that had befallen him. His aliments were beyond our capabilities to heal, but with some luck, I’m hopeful that the priestess could help. After finishing at the church, we sold some of the excess gear that we had no use for and were just about ready to settle in for the night when the town was besieged by orcs and giants. The city was in the midst of chaos and Jegrin Grath asked us for help. He said that it was imperative that we light the beacons to illuminate the city in hopes of fending off the orcish attacks. We lit the first and second beacons and then continued into the lower city. We moved house to house clearing them of the orcish invaders until we ran into the largest group, led by some sort of drum playing, spell casting villain. I’m not sure what happened throughout that fight, I spent most of it under the effects of a sleeping spell. When I came to, the orcs were dead, and so we decided to move on.
